Elgin “Golfball Direct Reading” men’s Retro Modern design jump hour wristwatch in 10K yellow rolled gold plate and stainless steel, circa 1957.
Most collectors refer to this model of Elgin’s “Direct Reading” as the “Golfball” watch because of the dimpled case. Elgin cataloged it as the “Direct Reading 9587” and it was priced at $69.50 in 1957. The watch features an early use of the digital concept, with two rotating disks displaying the time through a window in the case, with the hour disk jumping at each hour. This example is in excellent condition with only light brassing to the bezel edges and lugs. The case measures 38mm long and 31mm wide. Original dial disks are superb, with no chips or cracks. Has new acrylic crystal. This watch is powered by its correct 17-jewel Elgin grade 717 manual wind movement, just serviced and running well, with the hour disk jumping crisply at the top of each hour.
