Rare Elgin “Clubman 1636” men’s Art Deco design wristwatch in solid 14K white gold, circa 1932.

Early solid gold men’s Elgin wristwatches are quite scarce, as the company focused its marketing efforts on lower cost gold-filled and nickel cased watches. This is the first example I have offered of this rare model. The “Model 1636” has a simple barrel-shaped case with Art Deco engravings around the sides and sold for $65.00 in 1932. It is in excellent condition showing only slight wear. Caseback is excellent, with a monogram and some faint dings. Case measures 34mm long and 27mm wide. Enamel inlaid dial is excellent... one of the few enamel inlaid dials that Elgin offered. Has new glass crystal. The watch is powered by its correct 19-jewel Elgin grade 499 adjusted movement, introduced no doubt to compete with top-of-the-line solid gold Hamiltons with 19-jewel grade 979 and 401 movements.
