Rare Hamilton “Sherwood R” men’s Retro Modern design wristwatch in solid 14K yellow gold with wood dial, circa 1961.
After some significant research and development, Hamilton offered a few select models of its regular watch line with genuine wood dials in 1961. These striking watches were not popular with consumers and very few were sold. All the wood-dialed watches were dropped from the Hamilton line after 1962 and consequently they are rare today. This “Sherwood R” has a dial of Benin teak and was based on the solid gold “Sir Echo” model, priced at $135.00 in 1961. This is only the second example I have offered in 20 years. This example is in crisp, near mint condition showing virtually no wear. Caseback is superb and unengraved, with some its factory-applied circular brushed finish intact. Case measures 40mm long and 33mm wide. Original dial is superb and has solid 14K gold applied numerals and markers. Acrylic crystal is superb. This watch is powered by its correct 22-jewel Hamilton grade 770 movement.
