Rare Hamilton “Wrist Watch for Men” in sterling silver, circa 1919.

Hamilton introduced its first men’s wristwatch in 1917, using existing pocket watch movements, referring to the watch briefly at first as the “Gent‘s Wristwatch,” then as the “Military Wristwatch,” the name changed aimed at marketing the watches to men heading overseas to fight in World War I. But it wasn’t until April of 1919 that Hamilton made movements specifically designed for men’s wristwatches… this “Wrist Watch for Men” with the new 0-size grade 981 movement. This round-cased version is much rarer than the cushion-cased version usually seen, with only 300 produced in silver. This example is in excellent condition with the correct Fahys sterling silver case showing only light wear. Caseback is excellent, with a monogram. The case measures 42mm long and 34mm wide. Original porcelain dial is very good, with some hairline cracks and a small chip at the edge near 11 o’clock. Has new glass crystal. This watch is powered by its correct 17-jewel Hamilton grade 981 movement.
