Scarce Hamilton “Transcontinental A” men’s Retro-Modern design time zone wristwatch in 10K yellow gold fill and stainless steel, circa 1955.
This is the first “Transcontinental” I have offered in several years. The “Transcontinental A” has a rotating disk in the center of the dial with a map of the United States and Great Britain divided into the appropriate time zones, with the local time zone marked with a gold hand and the others with gold arrows. Designed for the rapidly increasing use of telephones and air travel by businessmen in the 1950s, its purpose was to show the time in multiple locations across the United States and Europe. Priced at $95.00 in 1955, it was never a popular watch and is now quite scarce. This example is in crisp, excellent condition with no brassing. The stainless steel screw back is excellent and unengraved, with some light marks. The case measures 39mm long and 33mm wide. Original dial is superb. Has new glass crystal. The watch is powered by its correct 17 jewel Hamilton grade 661 automatic movement. I will set the hour hand to the buyer’s time zone.
